About Me

My photo
I've been writing since I could first hold a pencil, and by all accounts I didn't limit myself to paper. Walls, tablecloths and the occasional sibling were all fair game, and it shouldn't be surprising to learn that markers were banned in my home with all due haste. Although I now content myself with inconveniencing electrons, the desire to bring the stories in my mind to life hasn't waned. In my spare time, I read, putter in the kitchen, and relax on my terrace or at the lake, weather permitting, with my corgi who strives to be part muse, part food disposal. I'm also addicted to coffee and have a close relationship with my Keurig.

Some reviews for Ghost's Dilemma

I don't normally do this. I don't post my reviews on my blog, but these reviews leave me humbled and very grateful for my readers. I would write regardless, because the stories want to be told, but to know I've touched readers is something I will cherish. Thank you, all my readers, from the bottom of my heart.

M/M Fantasy/Adventure Romance Ghost's Dilemma by Morwen Navarre

While the beauty of the story and writing was clear, once I was done I felt like I had read a classic, full of beauty, love and strong messages about life, personality and the value of humans.

Magical, intense at times, fast paced and fascinating.

Wonderful read by T London

February 20, 2015 - Amazon Review
I didn’t read the first book in this collection and I feel I would have gained more from the overall story if I had but I don’t feel it took away from the beauty in book 2 as both Ghost and Gerry are strong male characters who are not afraid of love and show their emotions.

Gerry is Ghost alpha and protector. Ghost has taken over the healing of the community using his witch craft and visions that he gets. Sometimes the visions come in riddles that he must decipher and make sense of. When confronted with a situation that will affect the people in his community he must figure out the answers that will rest in only what he can see and what he knows.

This is a story of m/m love but it goes past just the sex, these men are committed to each other in ways that can rarely be seen in relationships today. They support each other and have taken the vows of being protector and the protected. While Gerry will want to rush in and take care of what threatens Ghost, he trust in the man he loves enough to allow Ghost to do what he needs to do in his role as healer.

The writing style is not of the modern age, it felt as if the scenes were a mixture of the past and the future all weaved into one time frame which gave this story a unique and romantic feel as you read it. While the beauty of the story and writing was clear, once I was done I felt like I had read a classic, full of beauty, love and strong messages about life, personality and the value of humans. I am not normally a fan of this genre but I am very thankful I was offered a chance to read this book. It touched my heart and soul and I don’t think I will forget Ghost and Gerry any time soon.

With this novel, Morwen Navarre builds upon the world she created when we first met Ghost and the Witch, and she does not disappoint.

As you read, you can't help but feel there are other stories around every corner, just waiting to be told. Ghost himself comes upon one or two of them on his travels. And, like the world he inhabits, Ghost has grown and matured as a character. Set a short time after the first, we get to see him fulfilling his new role in the community where he lives with his Alpha, Gerry.

I won't write any spoilers in this review, but I will say that this series of stories is for you whether you like romance, sci-fi, adventure or fantasy. It's imaginative, mysterious, and most of all unique. You don't need to have read the first book to enjoy this, but you may well find yourself seeking it out afterwards.

As a reader, I can't draw a convenient line to say where the future ends, and where the dark ages begin anew. It is a full and richly textured canon that leaves you wanting to know more, and I really hope there will be many more books in this series.

Brilliant storytelling, and the well written love scenes between Ghost and Gerry are the icing on top.

I really enjoyed reading about Ghost, a witch and healer, and Gerry, his Alpha. These two seemed to be a great couple. I only wish I had read the first book, as I was confused about some things that were mentioned in the book.

Intriguing story that grabs your attention from the beginning and keeps it to the end. Ghost tries to stop a plague from killing his people. There are dangers everywhere and he has to figure out who he can trust while also finding a cure.

Magical, intense at times, fast paced and fascinating. I really enjoyed this magical world setting. It was both intriguing and fascinating the more I read. Very well written.

Great read.

Quotes from Ghost's Dilemma
“You're the first male witch in generations. You count for something. Your presence will be recorded by the witchsisters. Even though some of them hate you and would love to feed you to a lair full of hungry sind." Gerry's eyes held humor. "There are far more who'll make sure everyone remembers how the Witch taught Ghost, a witch and a seer, and a man of honor. I hope they mention your beautiful spiral. Those stones which glow when you're working your magic, but which never shine brighter than your eyes.”

“If you leave with me, they'll say we both ran away," Ghost said, his voice muffled in Gerry's cloak. "If you're here, they might believe I'll come back. Please, Gerry. I need to go alone. We talked about this. You said you would let me go if I needed to. I need you to be strong enough to let me leave.”

Excerpt

Warm. Warm, strong arms surrounded him. Ghost smiled and moved closer, burying his face in the hard muscle of a shoulder. He knew he needed to get up to tend to his patients, but he was still so tired. He nuzzled deeper into the shoulder that was… clearly not Gerry's.
"The little one wakes." A deep, rumbling voice pierced his fog of sleep.
Ghost shoved hard against the arms holding him. He wriggled free and sat up. He heard a door close somewhere behind him. "Let go of me," he growled. He was wide awake now, his heart pounding against his ribs.
The man belonging to the arms was bare-chested, as was Ghost, to his chagrin. He was quite relieved to see he still wore his breeches, though relief didn't stop him from glaring at the man in the bed with him.
"You're fierce, little one. This is good to see. It means you are not too soft, like the rest of the outlanders from down below." The man sat up as well. His long white hair was bound back in many braids, each one tipped with a bead carved from the red wood of the South. An intricate black tattoo covered both his arms. The man's blue eyes watched Ghost with undisguised amusement. "You have jewels in your head, little one. Did the woman decorate you so?"
"What woman?" Ghost retorted, watching the man for any untoward movement. "Are you talking about the Witch? Is she here?"
"Outlanders do not ask. They listen. And answer." The man's voice dropped to a warning snarl. "Hair and eyes do not make you one of us, little one. Do not presume you have a place here."

I've always been a writer in some way, whether it was writing on the walls as a child, the copious notebooks I filled as a teen, or the volumes of fan fiction I wrote as an adult. Now I write erotic romance. We are creatures of sensation, craving touch and filled with desires we might not even want to admit to ourselves. Try as we might to ignore and deny the passion inside us, it's still there. It cries for attention and finds its outlet in my writing.
Ghost's Sight was written in response to a prompt from a friend and is an impassioned tale of two men who find each other in unexpected circumstances. Their story continues with Ghost's Dilemma and possibly a third volume yet to come.

Reviews...

...or "Why Won't Amazon and Amazon UK Play Nicely?"

I have reviews on Amazon UK! I do! It's very exciting, but for some inexplicable reason, Amazon doesn't display reviews from Amazon UK. I have no idea why, because part of the wonder of ebooks is that they are a global sort of thing.

In order to spread the word, I'm going to post the link to the Amazon UK version of my Amazon Author's Page. Just because.

More background on Ghost's world...

One of the themes that comes up a lot, naturally, is the healer lore of Ghost's world. After all, that is part of what he does, as a witch. Some of his tools are familiar to us, and some are not so far from reality.

The gods' light Ghost uses is a medical laser, hand-held, and with multiple settings. It can be used as a self-cauterizing scalpel, as well as to cauterize open wounds, but this device can also close wounds and knit the skin. That latter function would come in handy instead of stitches or surgical staples, right?

The Seeker's kiss is a transdermal hypodermic. The medication is loaded into refillable cartridges, and then injected through the skin without needles.

The Seeker's box that the Witch uses is a portable blood chemistry analyzer. A drop of blood is taken and the device can check for abnormalities. Miniaturization is always a hot trend, so I could see this one becoming viable.

Obviously, centrifuges are used routinely and would be nothing new to us, nor would the witchglass, a combination solar panel and battery that the witches use to recharge their devices.

Herbal medicines have given birth to so many modern medicines that it should not be far fetched at all to see Ghost and other healers using them. Traditionally, witches have been seen as wise women, herbalists who could cure illnesses, birth babies, and perform minor surgeries. However, the witchsisters of Ghost's world, Ghost included, see themselves as having another important role.

Knowledge is power, and the witches are custodians of a great deal of knowledge gleaned from the ruins of the fallen cities. While they are no more eager than anyone else to return to that form of society, they are wise enough to want to preserve the best of it. It sets them apart, and often sets them at odds with the godsmen and elders, but the witches fulfill that role of lorekeeper without apology.

Worlds and world building...

If you've read Ghost's Sight, or if you've peeked ahead and checked out the excerpt from Ghost's Dilemma on the preorder page at Torquere, you may have noticed that their world is close to, but not quite Earth. World building is probably one of the most enjoyable and most frustrating parts of writing science fiction and fantasy.

In this instance, I didn't want the world to be unfamiliar, but I also didn't want to use the idea of Earth in the future. Not that it's a bad idea, mind you, but I like taking that step sideways and altering things subtly. In this case, it's a post-apocalyptic world where people have come to terms with the changes, and gone on to rebuild a society markedly different from before. In order to make this world come alive, I need to know all the niggling little details about it, even if I never actually explain it in so many words in the books.

The world has a year that lasts 320 days, divided into ten moons that are thirty-two days in length. Each moon consists of four quarter-moons of eight days each. A day has twenty hours, and they mark high sun (midday) and high moon (midnight) as we do.

Like we do, they name the days, in their case in honor of the Eight, their gods: Fatherday, Ladyday, Hunterday, Farmerday, Moonday, Seaday, Farday, and Lastday. Lastday is considered a very unlucky day to transact business, or to be joined as mates.

There are four major holidays marking the turn of the seasons, very important in a society that depends on farming and hunting. They celebrate Harvesttide, Deepwinter, Renewal, and Highsummer, usually with a communal feast.

So, it's close enough that most readers won't have trouble following without a lot of exposition, but still just that little bit different. I know I actually enjoy getting to learn a new society and culture, and I'd hope my readers enjoy that, too.

Have I squealed enough?

The truth is I thought Ghost's Sight was a standalone novella, a sweet little story that I wrote because the lovely PT Walden said I could do it. I submitted it, and was beyond thrilled to have it accepted for publication, but I still really thought I was done with Ghost and Gerry.

Characters tend to take a different view sometimes, and they were no exception. Ghost and Gerry wanted to share more of their journeys, and so there I was in November 2013, writing their story for my NaNoWriMo submission. What surprised me was how happy some readers were to find out that there would be a second book. Most likely, there will be at least a third. I'm already getting prodded by the pair of them.

But now I'm curious. I know what excites me as a reader when I find a book that's becoming a series, but what is it that hooks you, either as a reader or as a writer?
